Mierka Donauhafen Krems: Directly to German seaports with Metrans

Mierka Donauhafen Krems sees HHLA subsidiary Metrans as ideal partner to expand maritime logistics

Participation in the ecoplus delegation’s journey with the Lower Austrian Minister of Economy Petra Bohuslav to northern Germany in June 2012 pays for the Port of Krems GmbH & Co. KG. Representatives of the company established contacts with Metrans, a subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG. Now the project was finalised through a direct link between the German seaports and Lower Austria.

"I am especially pleased that we are able to present a success a few months after our trip, and the Port of Krems is now directly connected to the German ports via Metrans, the subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG," said Petra Bohuslav.

Initially three weekly pairs of trains will connect Krems with Hamburg and Bremerhaven. In future, the frequency shall be increased to five pairs of trains. The trimodal container terminal on the site of Krems Danube port with connections to rail, road and inland waterway, with four tracks of each 680 meters, and an area of 30,000 m², meet all the requirements for a complete range of maritime container logistics.

Hubert Mierka, managing partner of Mierka Donauhafen Krems GmbH & Co. KG, sees Metrans as an ideal partner for the further development of the port, "With Metrans we want to expand our position as a multimodal freight station offering tailored logistics solutions through strengthening maritime logistics. Thanks to its broad service portfolio and customer neutrality Metrans is an excellent fit with our business model. "

The Port of Hamburg is an important partner for the Lower Austrian companies. In 2011, around 50,000 TEU were moved in container shipping business. Lower Austria’s major exporters include the companies Stora Enso Wood Products GmbH, Doka GmbH, Agrana AG, Pollmann Austria and the Fritz Egger group.
