Less throughput in Austria’s Danube ports in 2009

Austria’s Danube ports had to face declines in throughput on the water in the year 2009

The ports and piers on the Austrian section of the river Danube registered a lower throughput volume in the past year than in 2008. The total freight tonnage on the water declined according to calculations of Statistik Austria by 19.3 per cent or 1.71 million tons of goods to 7.18 million tons.

In Linz 4.16 million tons of goods were handled on the water in the reporting period. This is a decrease of 22.6 per cent. In Vienna’s ports a fall of 30.5 per cent to 1.02 million tons was registered, while Krems was 48.2 per cent below its previous year level with 259,021 tons handled in 2009. Throughput at the port of Enns dropped 1.2 per cent to 532,024 tons. The other ports and piers have put through a total of 1.21 million tons, and hence achieved a plus of 19 per cent compared to the previous year, as Statistik Austria announces in a press release.
