LAN Cargo strengthens its role as “Knight of the Rose“ in the sky

Chile’s cargo airline flew about 9,000 tonnes of flowers for Valentines Day from South America to all over the world in advance

During the past three weeks LAN Cargo and its subsidiaries accomplished a logistic feat by shipping over 15 million bouquets worldwide. Thus, the Chilean airline has transported 32 per cent of all flowers in Colombia and 40 per cent of Ecuador’s flowers, which is about 9,400 tonnes.

In the period from January 20 to February 9, 2014, about 200 daily LAN Cargo flights will take off from the airports Bogotá and Medellín in Colombia, as well as from Ecuador’s capital Quito. With an average freight of 2,100 tonnes of flowers at the peak days, deliveries triple during this time. Most flights landed in the Netherlands and the US, Miami in particular, as LAN Cargo operates the US’ biggest refrigeration plants, making it an important hub for global cargo transport.

„We are glad being able to make such a big contribution to Valentine’s Day. In terms of flower transport this day counts among the most important dates of the year. We expect a six per cent growth for this year“, says Cristian Ureta, CEO of the cargo unit of the LATAM Airlines Group.

In Latin America, Colombia and Ecuador are among the world’s major flower exporters. For both countries, floriculture is an important economic factor. The most important types of flowers include red roses (over 60 per cent; the production was tripled for this season), carnations, dahlias and chrysanthemums.

Upon arrival, the flowers in LAN Cargo’s refrigeration plants in Miami are subject to a strict cooling process in order to preserve the life of the blossoms. Following this, the flowers are mainly flown to various U.S. cities, and fewer via Amsterdam to Europe as well as via Sydney to the South Pacific.
