SBB Cargo International starts on schedule

Swiss cargo railway company SBB Cargo is the market leader of cargo transport on the rail in Switzerland

At the beginning of the year 2011 the joint subsidiary of SBB Cargo and Hupac – SBB Cargo International – has started operating. The autonomous company based in Olten in the Canton of Solothurn concentrates on handling block trains and combined transport trains operating in transit crossing the Alps on the north-south corridor between Germany and Italy. The joint venture has employees in Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

The parent company SBB Cargo transports around 200,000 tons per day, which is about one fourth of the total cargo forwarded in Switzerland. On behalf of their customers (from the mineral oil or metal industry, as well as the post, food and trade chains, building enterprises and waste disposal companies) the Swiss railway enterprise operates an area-wide network covering 323 points of delivery with a high-quality overnight service. In addition SBB Cargo offers its customers 200 flexible transport concepts outside of the basic network.

More than 3,500 employees generated a transport performance of around 13.11 million net ton kilometres in 2010, which means a 12.3 per cent-increase on the previous year. In particular international combined transport and transportations for the steel industry rose significantly, which SBB Cargo attributes to the economic recovery.

SBB Cargo, a subsidiary of the Swiss national railway SBB, is headquartered in Basel. In addition to SBB Cargo International, they have another subsidiary – ChemOil Logistics – which is specialising in logistics for mineral oil and chemical products.
