APM Terminals expands into Eastern Black Sea

A.P. Moller-Maersk company APM Terminals takes over 80 per cent-share in Poti Sea Port (Georgia)

In line with APM Terminals investment strategy in high growth markets, the company acquires an 80 per cent-share in Poti Sea Port, from Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA). Strategically located in the Eastern Black Sea, the port currently serves as the European gateway for goods flows to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and return. Experts say the port is ideally located to become a future logistics hub for Central Asia trade. APM Terminals will invest around USD 100 million over the next five years in upgrading and expanding the port facilities.

Poti Sea Port has 15 berths, with total berth length of 2,900 meters and more than 20 quay cranes for the handling of liquid and dry bulk, rolling stock as well as general cargo. A Rail Ferry Terminal“ is also available. In the year 2010, 1,557 vessels called at the port, which handled their 4.9 million tons of bulk, about 23,000 ro-ro vehicles and 210,000 TEU containerised goods.
