National strike hits Portugal’s transport system

Yesterday’s 24-hour strike by public sector workers in Portugal almost crippled the country’s transportation system.

With air traffic controllers and airport ground handlers on strike, dozens of flights into and out of Lisbon and Oporto were cancelled or rescheduled.

According to the unions, all of Portugal’s ports were closed, and only 20% of the country’s trains were operating.

The strike, which has been building up for weeks, was organised by two of Portugal’s biggest unions in protest at the government’s austerity measures.
