Danube Commission: New figures of the Danube shipping industry

Goods throughput in Danube ports shows slight decline in calendar year 2008
 

At the turn of the year the Danube Commission presented a hot off the press overview of the figures of the Danube shipping industry. According to these statistics the inland ports of the member states handled around 63.5 million tons of goods in 2008. This is a 3.3-per cent decline compared to the previous year. In absolute figures the volume was down 2.2 million tons. The decline affected mainly the following goods: metal and mining products, agricultural products, building materials, chemical raw materials, mineral products and several kinds of interim goods.

With an annual volume of 14 million tons Serbia made up the biggest part in the total volume. Second and third place go to Romania with 12.6 million tons and Ukraine with 10.6 million tons, respectively. Austria accounted for around 9 million tons.
